Seneca Village was founded in 1825 by free Black Americans. At its peak, it had ~225 residents, 3 churches, 2 schools, and 3 cemeteries. In 1857, through eminent domain, the villagers were ordered to leave and their houses were torn down for the construction of Central Park.
